ZONES OF REGULATION
At Bishopswood, we use the Zones of Regulation across the school to help pupils understand and manage their emotions.
The Zones provide a shared language for pupils, staff and families to talk about feelings, self-regulation and behaviour in a positive, supportive way.
The approach helps pupils to recognise when they are in different “zones”
-
Blue Zone: feeling tired, sad or unwell
-
Green Zone: calm, focused and ready to learn
-
Yellow Zone: feeling worried, excited or frustrated
-
Red Zone: feeling angry or overwhelmed
Through stories, visuals, role play and daily check-ins, pupils learn strategies to move back to the “green zone.”
Staff model emotional regulation and use consistent visual supports to help pupils notice how they feel and what they can do next.
The Zones link closely to our personal development curriculum and support pupils to:
-
build emotional vocabulary
-
develop independence and resilience
-
improve attention and engagement in learning
Families are encouraged to use the same language at home to strengthen consistency and confidence.
Together, we help pupils recognise that all feelings are valid, and that understanding emotions is the first step towards wellbeing and successful learning.
“When we name our feelings, we can manage them – and when we can manage them, we can learn.
