Access to the foundation subjects of our curriculum is an entitlement for every child. Our schemes of work have been designed to suit all levels of ability and a wide range of special needs. 
Skills, knowledge and attitudes presented through core subjects are reinforced and put to practical use in foundation subject teaching modules.

information & communication technology (ICT)  ICT may be used to aid communication and to enhance learning across the curriculum. Pupils use a wide range of digital technologies including 'switches', desktop PCs, tablet devices, cameras, video, and Interactive Whiteboards and a range of equipment to modify the environment within the sensory room.

physical education  Pupils develop their movement and co-ordination skills in a variety of activities e.g. health-related fitness, dance, games, gym, outdoor activities and athletics. They learn important social and communication skills by co-operating with others. Swimming activities and water safety are taught regularly from an early age. Hydrotherapy, motor education programmes, and horse riding through the RDA, are offered, following an assessment for suitability.

history  Pupils share personal, family and local histories. They learn how the past is different from the present by studying key historical and events. They are encouraged to think about what it might have felt like to have lived in a different time e.g. during World War 2 or during the Great Fire of London.

geography Pupils learn to move around and find out about the school and local environments. They learn to build mental maps. They begin to learn about other places in the UK and wider world. They explore how people affect the environment and how they are affected by it.

design and technology Pupils are encouraged to use their hands and tools effectively for everyday activities such as eating, playing, drawing and cutting, linking made with occupational therapy programmes.They develop planning and making skills, evaluate their own products and explore how existing products work.

music  We exploit music's potential as a means of self-expression and communication. Music plays an important role as a cueing mechanism to signal the beginning and end of sessions during the day. Pupils listen carefully and respond physically to a wide range of sounds and music from different times and cultures. They learn how it creates different moods and effects. They explore songs and musical instruments and are actively encouraged to improvise and perform in front of others.

art and design  Pupils develop their creativity and imagination by exploring the visual, tactile and sensory qualities of materials and processes. They experiment with colour, shape, space, pattern and texture and learn to use a variety of tools to express themselves through art and design. They experience art in their environment and from different times and cultures and are encouraged to respond.

countryside stewardship Older secondary students may follow a two year modular course learning about land management, including the countryside code, health and safety, and animal husbandry. The course is offered at a nearby nature reserve and is practically based.

modern foreign languages In years 7-9 (KS3) basic French or Spanish is offered, and taught by a language specialist. Pupils learn to listen, speak and respond in another language about familiar topics, introducing an international dimension to pupils learning. It proves a fun and effective way for developing general communication skills.
